University of York Library refurbishment update

How to request a book from the third floor of the JB Morrell Library

Science book collections in the following list have moved to the third floor of the JB Morrell Library:

General Science (R)
Mathematics (S-SF)
Computer Science (SK)
Astronomy (T)
Physics & Electronics (U)
Chemistry (V)
Geology & Biosciences (W-WX)
Biology (X-XZ)
Technology (Z).

The newly-refurbished third floor will not be open to Library users until January. In the meantime, Library staff will retrieve books for users. There are 3 ways to request a book:

1. Complete a retrieval form (available from the Lending Services and Help & Information desks) and leave it in the marked box on the Lending Services counter near the entrance to Key Texts. Please allow sufficient time for retrieval: for example, if a form is submitted between 09.00 and 10.00, the book will be available to collect from Lending Services after 11.00.

The final book retrieval of the day will take place an hour before the Lending Services desk closes and self-service opening hours begin. Opening hours for the remainder of the autumn term and the Christmas vacation are published on the Library's website.

2. Phone the Library's Lending Services staff (01904 323873) to ask for a book to be retrieved at the next available opportunity. Staff will advise you when the book will be ready for you to collect.

3. Send an email to Lending Services staff providing the details of the book you need, and the date and time you will collect it. At least 24 hours' notice is required for email requests.

Books not collected from Lending Services by the end of the day will be returned to the third floor.

JB Morrell Library, York refurbishment work

Refurbishment work at the JB Morrell Library, York is ongoing. We are currently going through the 'hump' of the work - but improvements should start appearing in the next few weeks. Outlined below is a summary of the current situation:

The 2nd floor is now open and work is now ongoing on the 3rd floor. The lift, however, is currently out of use as is the main stairway. Access to the first and second floor is therefore via stairs located passed the main stair, beside the audio visual room/old pc classroom. (If unsure ask a member of staff.) It is hoped that both the lift and the main stair will be back in use in October.

Medical books are still located in the same area on the first floor: from the temporary stairs you should see the Reference Collection labelled straight ahead - the Medical Collection (Y) is located through the doorway to the left of this.

A new PC classroom will be opening imminently on the second floor with most of the Library PCs in transit. In the meantime there is some PC availability on the ground floor.

The Library is taking over the adjacent Computing Science building, which should be open c. Easter 2011. The full Library refurbishment is due in the academic year 2011/12. You can stay up to date with the refurbishment at http://uoylibrary.blogspot.com.

University of York Library & Archives closure - 23 July

Following last year's successful Library & Archives Staff Training Day, we have scheduled a follow-up event on Friday 23 July, 2010. This will focus on the quality of our customer service, and given the current refurbishment and the feedback we are receiving from users on library services during this work, the need to have a meeting for all staff has been strongly reinforced.

We therefore intend to close the Library & Archives (JB Morrell, Raymond Burton and King's Manor Libraries and Borthwick Institute for Archives) on Friday 23 July for this purpose.

Please contact Stephen Town (jst504@york.ac.uk, x.3863) about any adverse effect on specific academic requirements this may cause, so that we can make arrangements to mitigate these.

The catalogue and electronic resources will remain available on 23 July; Key Texts and DVDs borrowed on 22 July will be due back on 24 July.

Brynmor Jones Library affected by maintenance work from Mon 5th July

Please note the following:

On Monday the 5th of July 2010 refurbishment and maintenance work will commence in two separate areas of the Brynmor Jones Library.

Second Floor
From Monday the 5th of July the 2nd Floor of the Brynmor Jones Library will be closed whilst work is undertaken to upgrade the lighting on this floor. Initial work will involve the removal of the existing ceiling and whilst this is underway there will be no access to any of the material on that floor. Once the work on the ceiling is complete staff within the Brynmor Jones Library will be operating a daily retrieval service for customers who require materials located on the second floor. Customers requiring materials retrieving from the 2nd floor can submit requests at the circulation desk or via an email to help@hull.ac.uk. [N.B we have been informed this should not affect the 2nd Floor East - only the Tower. CK]

Whilst we have been informed that the whole project should be completed by the 31st July 2010 the contractors are unable to predit with any certainty the length of time that the first stage, taking down the existing ceiling, will take. I would reiterate that during this first stafe materials and resources located on the 2nd floor WILL NOT be available.

Fourth Floor
From Mon the 5th of July work will also begin on replacing some damaged pipe-work on the west side of the 4th floor of the Brynmor Jones Library. Whilst this work is taking place the west side of the floor will be cordoned off and the sixth floor will be temporarily designated as the 'Silent Floor'. Books and other materials should still be accessible whilst the work is in progress but computers on the west side of the floor will be removed to protect them from damage. Again, the nature of the work being undertaken means that it is impossible to give a firm schedule for the completion of the work at this time although it is expected that this will take much less time than that being propese for the second floor.

I would like to apologise in advance for the disturbance and inconvenience that this essential refurbishment and maintenance work will cause those of our customers who may need access to the resources on these floors.

If you would like any more information on these material please contact Judy Wolff on Tel: 04182 46 5438 or by email: j.wolff@hull.ac.uk.

University of York Library - Alternative study spaces

As you may be aware, study places in the J B Morrell Library are under additional pressure due to the current major refurbishment work.

To help you find other places to study across the Heslington campus, the Library is pulling together information from a variety of sources into a new University of York study spaces web page. Please note this is a work in progress and is being updated as new spaces are identified.

The web pages include some spaces where the University has agreed to extend access hours. The Library is also investigating options for additional new spaces and is aiming for these to be ready as soon as possible. These will be advertised them as soon as they become available.

Please look at the
Library refurbishment website for further information on the project
. Please email library@hyms.ac.uk if you have any HYMS-related comments or queries.
