Improved access to the internet at York Hospital

As of 28 October 2013, students and staff at York Hospital are enjoying faster access to the Internet.

The HYMS IT team working in partnership with the York Hospital Trust IT and colleagues from University of York IT Services have completed a substantial upgrade to the network bandwidth between HYMS and York Hospital, from 10Mbps to 1Gbps. This will give much faster login times at PCs, access to files, blackboard, email and other web-based resources.

This is part of a programme of connectivity and infrastructure upgrades to all our trust-based study facilities to give an 'on-campus' IT experience for our hospital-based students. This programme includes plans for video-conferencing and wireless developments across the HYMS patch.

Hull City of Culture map

Based at Hull and still finding your way around? Planning to visit Hull and want to know what there is to see? Have a look at (and print out) this fantastic, colourful city of culture map from the Hull Daily Mail at http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/images/localworld/ugc-images/276270/binaries/HullCityofCultureMap.pdf. We might be biased because it mentions the University and the Brynmor Jones Library but it's an excellent guide to what's special about Hull!

Forwarding mail from University email accounts to your HYMS account

The library staff at the Universities of York and Hull will normally use the university email accounts you are given as a member of HYMS to communicate with you on issues such as the availability of inter library loans, when you can pick up items you have requested and when items you have on loan are due. Therefore it is important, if you do not regularly check your university email accounts, to forward emails to your HYMS email account.

To forward emails from University of York email accounts, go to https://support.google.com/mail/answer/10957 for more information.

To forward emails from University of Hull email accounts, go to http://www2.hull.ac.uk/acs/ict/university_email/email_faqs.aspx for more information.

More NEW study space at the Brynmor Jones Library in Hull

The roll out of the Brynmor Jones Library redevelopment is picking up pace. This afternoon (c.2pm) we should see the opening of the newly refurbished 4th floor (Anthropology, Geography, History and Politics). This, and the recently opened 3rd floor (Medicine, Science, Engineering and Technology)  will have informal seating and individual desks for quiet study.  There will also be bookable group study rooms for students on both floors.  In all there are 190 reader spaces on each floor, 47 of which have PCs.  As in the Reading Room, there are printing, photocopying and scanning facilities, self-service book issue machines, quick information terminals and a recycling point.  The new, improved wireless network will also be available.

The refurbishment project as a whole is still on schedule to complete by July next year.

Further information on the Refurbishment Project is available at http://www2.hull.ac.uk/lli/bjl-redevelopment.aspx
